Evening MBA Graduation

This page contains information about graduation for the 2018-2019 academic year. It is updated throughout the year as more details about the graduation ceremony become available.

Please refer to the Student Handbook for your class for degree requirements and general information on applying for graduation.

Graduation Application

The online graduation application is available on the first day of each quarter. Please apply by the deadline posted on the main page of the application portal for the quarter you wish to graduate. Students must apply for graduation in order to graduate.

  • Students must be enrolled in classes during the quarter they plan to graduate.
  • On the graduate application form, specify “non-thesis” in response to the question about a “thesis” or “non-thesis” program.
  • The online graduation application provides an automatic degree audit of your transcript in regard to the UW Graduate School requirements for graduation.
  • Once you apply for graduation, the MBA Program Office conducts an MBA degree audit, after which you will receive an email that details specific classes and requirements that you must complete in order to graduate with an MBA degree.

    • Graduates must arrive no later than 6 p.m. Please meet in the Meany Studio Theater.
    • Tickets are required for family and guests (see below). Doors open at 6:15 p.m. The Processional of students begins promptly at 6:50 p.m. The ceremony generally runs from 7-9 p.m.
    • The ceremony will be recorded and posted online for those of your friends and family members who cannot attend.
  2. The UW Graduation Ceremony will be held the afternoon of Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Husky Stadium. Refer to the UW Commencement website for details on participating in that celebration.

Academic Attire

You will be required to wear the following academic attire at the ceremony: MBA gown, Master’s hodd in UW colors with royal blue for Foster, cap, and a black tassel. You may either purchase your attire via the University website or from a Foster Alumni. If you elect to obtain your attire through an alum, please notify Jenny Forbes in the MBA Program Office.

Graduation Tickets

The Foster School of Business Graduation Ceremony will require tickets for all guests to attend, including children. MBA Graduates do not require tickets, as they are part of the Ceremony.

To apply for ceremony tickets, complete the Graduating Student Survey by April 5, 2019.

The MBA Program Office can only guarantee 4 tickets per student, all others will be allocated as space provides. Once all tickets have been allocated, we will use a random lottery to distribute any remaining tickets (1 extra ticket per student).

The MBAA will also set up a google spreadsheet that is not monitored by the MBA Program Office. You may use this spreadsheet, or any method available to you, to trade with a fellow student for additional tickets.

2019 MBA Graduate Keynote Speaker

Yusuf Mehdi
Corporate Vice President, Modern Life, Search and Devices at Microsoft
Foster MBA Alumnus, Class of 1992

Yusuf Mehdi truly believes in Microsoft’s mission of empowering people and organizations to achieve more. The Corporate Vice President currently leads the Modern Life & Devices business with direct accountability for product management, business planning, go-to-market strategy and execution for the Windows platform and ecosystem, the Surface device portfolio, Office 365 consumer subscriptions, and Cortana, Skype, Bing, and MSN web services.

Fresh out of Princeton with an undergraduate degree in economics, Mehdi was a product manager for Reuters Group PLC, where he helped roll out the first PC-based Reuters Terminal, the standard platform for the company. This led to a tempting offer to run a Reuters business in Argentina, but Mehdi opted instead to pursue his MBA at Foster. At Foster, he was able to capitalize on a Microsoft internship and joined the tech company in 1992.

Mehdi’s initial job was marketing Windows 3.1. From there, he played key roles in Internet Explorer 1.0 to 5.0 and the commission to explore every commercial possibility of the online world, resulting in Bing, Microsoft Advertising and MSN, which became one of the most popular sites on the Web.

Mehdi went on to lead the rollout of Xbox One, the gaming and 4K entertainment console platform, and oversee development of blockbuster games like Halo and Minecraft. His teams have rejuvenated the Windows operating system, refined the category-creating Surface Pro tablet, created the smart assistant Cortana, and realized the sci-fi promise of mixed reality through HoloLens, the first fully untethered holographic computer that turns the world into a computer screen.

Under Mehdi’s leadership, the Windows and Devices Group, the largest reporting segment in Microsoft, generated nearly $40 billion in revenue and $8+ billion in operating profit last year.

Family Visiting from Outside the US

UW International Student Services has provided these suggestions on inviting family members from outside the United States to celebrate your commencement. The MBA Program Office can write you a letter to support visa applications for family traveling from outside the United States. Email mbaweb to request a letter. ISS also has some tips for strengthening their applications.

Diplomas

Three or four months after you graduate your diploma will be sent to the permanent address on record in MyUW at the time of graduation. The name on the diploma will appear as it does on the MyUW Web site. To change your address or the spelling/appearance of your name on your diploma, refer to the information on the UW Registrar’s website.
