Mission Statement

Foster School of Business Department of Accounting

To be the Pacific Northwest’s premier provider of accounting graduates:

  • Attract highly capable students to the undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Staff the accounting courses with capable, talented faculty.
  • Provide curricula that give students the concepts, knowledge, and skills necessary to be successful in the existing and future accounting profession.
  • Create a real-world connection for students through classroom materials and the use of guest lecturers from the accounting community.
  • Bring a research perspective to the classroom.
  • Provide an excellent and appropriate accounting foundation for non-accounting graduates.
  • Place BBA accounting graduates in career-oriented positions and place MPAcc graduates in professional accounting positions.

To be one of the top ten providers in the U.S. of important and relevant accounting research:

  • Publish academic research in top tier journals.
  • Serve as editors, associate editors, and editorial board members of major journals.
  • Publish state-of-the-art educational and professional materials.
  • Provide an environment that promotes the production of high quality research, participation in research conferences, and presentations of research at peer universities.
  • Attract highly capable students to the PhD program and place PhD graduates at well-respected academic institutions.

To provide leadership and service for the academic accounting profession nationally and the business and professional accounting community in the Pacific Northwest:

  • Participate and hold leadership positions in national academic organizations and in professional accounting organizations in the Puget Sound area.
  • Provide leadership in the Foster School of Business and University of Washington.
  • Provide sufficient opportunities for faculty and students to interact with the professional accounting community.

To obtain and use resources effectively and efficiently to accomplish this mission:

  • Obtain sufficient funding from the State of Washington for the basic academic programs.
  • Secure sufficient endowed funding to attract and retain key faculty.
  • Secure sufficient annual contributions to provide the needed margin of excellence in the accounting program.
  • Allocate resources to facilitate accomplishment of the department’s mission.
