Industry

Seattle’s economy is built on industries that shape how the world moves, connects, builds, heals, and innovates. As a major international transportation and trade hub, the region links the U.S. to global markets across the Pacific and beyond. From global technology leaders and aerospace giants to breakthrough biotech companies and clean energy startups, Seattle brings together established industries and emerging sectors at an unmatched scale.

Tech

Seattle’s tech sector isn’t just large; it’s foundational to the global digital economy. Companies like Amazon, Expedia, Zillow, and Microsoft anchor a local ecosystem of more than 18,000 tech firms. Hubs for Google, Meta, Nintendo, Salesforce, and others promote a deep bench of talent across cloud computing, AI, gaming, and enterprise technology. Seattle is also a center of venture capital, with billions in annual investment.

Energy

Seattle’s energy sector focuses on next-generation innovation. Alongside hydroelectric power, wind energy, and the nation’s cleanest electricity grid, the region is home to companies working on fusion, advanced batteries, and hydrogen. These newer energy ventures are creating a multitude of job opportunities in hard tech.

Agriculture, Seafood, and Wine

Washington grows more than 300 crops and leads the nation in products like apples, cherries, blueberries, and hops. It’s also the second-largest wine-producing state in the U.S., with over 1,000 wineries making over 10 million cases of wine each year. At the same time, Seattle’s location fuels a major seafood and fishing industry, exporting nearly $1 billion in seafood every year.

Healthcare and Biotech

Seattle is home to one of the largest life sciences and healthcare ecosystems in the U.S., anchored by institutions such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine, Providence, the Allen Institute, and Seattle Children’s, as well as companies like Pfizer and Novo Nordisk. The city brings together clinical care, research, and a growing base of biotech and medtech startups, creating a strong pipeline from discovery to real-world impact.

Aerospace and Maritime

In Seattle, the aerospace, aviation, and maritime industries operate at scale. Boeing and Blue Origin anchor an aerospace network of more than 1,500 suppliers: the largest in the U.S. That scale extends across maritime and trade: a network of 75 ports connects 12,000 exporters to over 200 countries. Military installations such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord reinforce the region’s critical role and support one of the largest workforces in the country.

Retail

Seattle is at the forefront of retail innovation, home to industry-defining companies like Costco, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Brooks Running, and REI. Together, they’re shaping how we shop, from membership models to immersive experiences, while expanding the possibilities of retail.

Seattle Lifestyle

In Seattle, lifestyle and opportunity go hand in hand. The region’s culture is rooted in wellness, balance, and connection to the outdoors, with mountains, water, and forests woven into everyday life. Residents have access to world-class sports, arts, food, and culture, alongside year-round opportunities for hiking, skiing, cycling, paddling, and other outdoor activities, making it easy to move between city life and nature.

Seattle’s adventure culture draws people to the city. The network of bike lanes, parks, and trails makes it easy to move between urban life and nature, whether that means a morning ride along Lake Washington, an afternoon hike in the Cascades, or a weekend on the water. In the winter, ski resorts are just a short drive away. Beyond the city, the landscape expands further, with more than 140 state parks and three national parks within reach for day trips.

Seattle is known for its passionate sports scene, anchored by the UW Huskies and complemented by professional teams including the Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Seattle Mariners (MLB), Seattle Kraken (NHL), Seattle Sounders FC (MLS), and Seattle Storm (WNBA). That spirit carries into a citywide culture of fitness, outdoor recreation, and year-round activity.

Creative energy bubbles up across the city, with anchors like the Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Glass, and Museum of Pop Culture, and a year-round calendar of festivals—from Seafair and Bumbershoot to Northwest Folklife and neighborhood street fairs. Coffee culture is part of the daily rhythm, from global brands to independent cafés that double as community hubs. Add in a food culture shaped by global communities and the region’s agricultural and coastal abundance, and the result is a city defined by both creativity and connection.
