Leading Transformation to Achieve Breakthrough Performance, a CEO panel discussion moderated by Dean James Jiambalvo. What strategies best increase market share and profitability?
James Jiambalvo is the Orin and Janet Smith Dean of the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington and former Kirby L. Cramer Chair in Business Administration. Dr. Jiambalvo has been leading the Foster School since 2005. During his time as Dean, he oversaw construction of two new buildings and received a gift that resulted in renaming the School as Foster. Prior to becoming dean, Dr. Jiambalvo taught accounting and received numerous teaching awards. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is the lead independent director of Saltchuk Resources.
Leading in a World of Cultural Differences by Professor Michael Johnson. How can global leaders most effectively influence people from various cultures?
Michael Johnson is a Professor of Management at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. His specialties include leadership, cross-cultural team learning, decision-making, and work identities and identification. He joined the University of Washington in 2006 and has taught in Executive Education and the Global Executive MBA program where many of the participants are from around the world. He has also received a number of teaching awards including Ascendant Scholar from Western Academy of Management and Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence.
Leading Innovation Past the Plateau by Professor Matthew O’Donnell. After organizations catch up in the development of products or services, how do they innovate to keep growing?
Matthew O’Donnell is a former Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Washington and currently a Professor of Bioengineering, as well as a renowned researcher and entrepreneur. His most recent research has explored new imaging modalities, including elasticity imaging, in vivo microscopy, optoacoustic arrays, photoacoustic contrast agents for molecular imaging and therapy, thermal strain imaging, and catheter-based devices. Prior experience includes work at General Electric’s R&D Center. He has won numerous awards, and is a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.

Leslie Koo*

Leslie Koo is the Chairman and CEO of Taiwan Cement Group. He is also an Advisory Board member at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. After getting his degree at the UW in accounting and computer science, Mr. Koo continued on to receive his MBA from Wharton. With this solid education, he joined Taiwan Cement in 1981 and was named President in 1991 and Chairman in 2003. In the last decade, he has grown Taiwan Cement both in terms of size and strength. Today, it is one of the largest cement companies in the world.

Rick Tsai

Rick Tsai is the Chairman and CEO of Chunghwa Telecom. From 1989 to 2014, Dr. Tsai worked at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), where he was President and CEO from 2005 to 2009. Previous to that, he served in various roles, including COO, VP of worldwide marketing and sales. Before that, he served two terms as EVP of operations. Between these two terms Dr. Tsai spent a short time away from TSMC, working as president of Vanguard International Semiconductor.

John T. Yu is the Chairman and CEO of CTCI Group, the largest and most successful EPC engineering company in Taiwan. Mr. Yu has successfully guided CTCI to become one of the top internal design firms. In 2013, CTCI ranked the 106th among the “The Top 225 International Design Firms” and is also recognized as one of the most admired companies in Taiwan, receiving numerous awards. In his role, Mr. Yu guides the Group management in setting the goals and crucial strategies of the Group; and exercises accountabilities for global operations and business expansion according to the Board.

Yu-Lon Chiao is the Chairman of Walsin Lihwa. In 1983, Mr. Chiao joined Walsin Lihwa as President, became Chairman in 1996 and Chief Executive Officer in 2005. Since he became Chairman, his management expertise and insight into industry trends have been steering many critical company decisions, including expansion into the stainless steel industry and ongoing expansion in the industry, reorganization and reengineering to enhance business performance, adopting business group management system, pursuit of aggressive growth by leveraging Mainland China as a growth engine, and establishment of new businesses such as Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) and special lighting technologies.

Richard Chang

Costco Taiwan
Richard Chang joined Costco in 1995 to expand its presence in Taiwan and is now the President/Country Manager of Costco Taiwan. Costco Taiwan is one of the most profitable regions within the company and has established itself as a market leader in Taiwan. During his leadership, Costco Taiwan has grown to 10 high sales volume warehouse clubs, one distribution center and over 4,000 employees. It has the highest ‘per store sales’ of any hypermarket on the island. Moving forward Mr. Chang plans to lead Costco Taiwan’s entry into the Taiwan ecommerce market and continue to open 1 warehouse per year through 2017.

Scott Grimsby is a Sales Director in Northeast Asia Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, with responsibilities for sales in Taiwan and Mongolia. In this role he is responsible for the sale of Commercial Airplanes products and services, and for managing business relationships with the airlines, government and other stakeholders. Mr. Grimsby has been in the Northeast Asia sales region since November 2003 and has worked in Boeing sales and marketing for more than 15 years. Previously, he held various positions in Boeing Business Jets, Customer Services, and the 777 Program.
