Satisfactory Academic Progress Guidelines

The following guidelines are built around the University of Washington’s Satisfactory Progress policy which states that students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to graduate. A minimum of a 2.7 shall be required in each graded course which counts towards satisfying graduate degree requirements.

Courses in the MSE program are only offered once per academic year, students who do not meet the 2.7 minimum for a course, will need to gain permission to return the following year to make up the requirement. Students who do not earn a 2.7 in any course, or who do not maintain the 3.0 cumulative GPA will be placed on probation, or dropped from the program if multiple quarters of below a 3.0 cumulative GPA persist.

Summer Quarter Probation

If a student falls below a 3.0 cumulative GPA after the first quarter, summer, they will be given an academic warning. They will meet with their MSE advisor and will be given a formal warning of the potential danger of being placed on probation if their cumulative GPA does not improve by the end of fall quarter.

Fall Quarter Probation

Once grades are posted at the end of the fall quarter, students whose cumulative GPA is:

  • 2.7 – 2.99 will be required to meet with the Director of the MSE program on a regular basis throughout the winter quarter. These students will be notified that they will be dropped from the program by the end of the winter quarter if the winter quarterly GPA is not at least a 3.0.

Winter Quarter Probation

If a student who was placed on academic probation prior to winter quarter does not raise their cumulative GPA to at least a 3.0 by the end of winter quarter, they will be dropped from the program.

For any student who drops below a 3.0 GPA for the first time after winter quarter grades are posted, they will be placed on probation and required to meet with the Director of the MSE program on a regular basis throughout the spring quarter.

Any student that does not reach a 3.0 cumulative GPA by the end of the spring quarter, they will not receive their degree.

Repeating Coursework

Repeating coursework may be approved if the course grade is below 2.7 but repeating courses and earning a new grade will only average with the GPA, it will not replace the first grade.
