Centennial Leadership Celebration

November 2, 2017

Looking back 100 years in Seattle, 1917 provided some notable beginnings with varying levels of long-term reach and impact:

  • Becoming the first U.S. squad to win Hockey’s Stanley Cup that year, the Seattle Metropolitans would disband just seven short years later.
  • By contrast,
    • The Lake Washington Ship Canal opened and has been in operation ever since.
    • A fledgling year-old start-up called the Pacific Aero Products Co. would be renamed the Boeing Airplane Company just a month after America declared war on Germany and prepared to enter WWI.
    • Simultaneously, the University of Washington responded to community urging by establishing a new school of business administration in Commerce (now Savery) Hall with seven faculty and BA and MBA 12 students. Today, UW Foster supports 3,000 ambitious students and 55,000 active alumni around the world. We also are home to The Financial Times #1 globally ranked public business school faculty for research productivity.

Please join Dean Jim Jiambalvo and Celebration MC Annie Young-Scrivner (Class of ’91; CEO, Godiva) as we celebrate Boeing and two other Washington business pillars of the last hundred years in Nordstrom and PACCAR. The program also will include a look to the century ahead with Microsoft Technical Evangelist Dr. James Whittaker. We will close out the dinner with our Centennial Showcase featuring students, staff and faculty from throughout the Northwest’s top business school.
