Hiring International Students
Foster international students bring global perspectives, multilingual skills, and adaptability—qualities shaped by succeeding in a new culture and often in a non-native language. They make up 9% of Foster undergraduates and 60% of Specialty Master’s students, and many have prior work experience in global markets.
Benefits for Employers
- Expands your candidate pool to highly qualified, diverse talent.
- Many candidates are eligible to work in the U.S. without immediate visa sponsorship.
- Global organizations can also hire for roles outside the U.S., with Foster’s support in sourcing and virtual interviews.
Note: Visa costs, processes, and availability are often more straightforward than expected—our team can guide you through each step.
U.S. Work Authorization Options
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT) – For F-1 visa students; part-time during the academic year or full-time in summer after one academic year. No cost to employers.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) – Up to 12 months after graduation (most business programs). Certain STEM-designated Foster programs allow a 24-month extension for a total of 36 months of work eligibility.
- H-1B Visa – Up to 6 years of work authorization for roles requiring at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Employers can petition while a candidate is on OPT for a smooth transition.

Employer Recruiting Policies
Foster’s recruiting policies ensure a fair, equitable process for both students and employers. Our guidelines align with national best practices (NACE, MBACSEA) and the University of Washington’s standards.
Undergraduate & Specialty Master’s Programs
- Employers must follow the UW Employer User Policy, NACE Principles, and Foster’s offer guidelines.
- Written offers should include job title, pay, terms, contingencies, and an expiration date.
- Two weeks for offer deadlines is typical, though flexibility is encouraged.
- Students are expected to release offers they don’t plan to accept, end job searches after accepting an offer, and avoid reneging.
- Employers must adhere to non-discrimination practices and provide reasonable accommodations upon request.
MBA Programs
- Foster MBA Career Management follows MBACSEA Standards and NACE professionalism policies.
- Exploding offers and “on-the-spot” deadlines are discouraged.
- Resumes obtained through MBA resume books or resume drops may only be used for recruiting purposes.
- Offer Guidelines: Must be written and include job title, pay, terms, contingencies, and an expiration date. Students must release unwanted offers, and reneging is strongly discouraged.
- Recommended Timelines:
- Full-time offers from internship employers: by Nov 30 or 3 weeks after written offer (whichever is later).
- Full-time offers to 2nd-year MBAs: by Dec 15 or 3 weeks after written offer.
- Internship offers: by Mar 1 or at least 2 weeks after written offer.
- Off-cycle offers: at least 3 weeks to respond.
