Our Faculty’s Contributions to the Accounting Profession

A program is only as great as the faculty who serve in the department, and our programs’ rankings reflect the excellence our faculty members strive to achieve in both research productivity and instruction quality. Our faculty members are renowned world-wide in the accounting industry, serving in editorial positions at top research journals and professional organizations, earning numerous awards for their research and teaching, and more. Below, you will find a small list of examples of some of the ways our faculty have contributed to the advancement of the accounting industry, as well as some of the acknowledgements the faculty have received for their accomplishments. 

Faculty Research Ranking Highlights

  • Brigham Young University’s (BYU) annual Accounting Rankings list the Foster School of Business as ranked 10th in the world for accounting research in top journals between 2015-2021.
  • An area of expertise among many of our faculty members, BYU’s rankings also ranked our accounting faculty as the 3rd biggest contributors to the field of financial accounting research between 2015-2021.
  • Many of our faculty members were also listed in the top 250 most productive researchers in overall accounting research over the last 6 years: Ed deHaan, Elizabeth Blankespoor, Sarah McVay, Stephanie Grant, Asher Curtis, Frank Hodge, Phillip Quinn.

Faculty Professional Service Highlights

  • Professor Sarah McVay was elected to a three-year term as the American Accounting Association (AAA) Vice President of Research and Publications.
  • Associate Professor Ed deHaan is serving as chair of the AAA Annual Doctoral Consortium for the years 2019-22. The Deloitte/AAA Doctoral Consortium, which this year celebrated its 50th rendition, brings together the top 100 doctoral students from around the world for four intense days of presentations, workshops, and networking.
  • Associate Professor Beth Blankespoor was asked by the FASB to Create and Lead a FASB Webinar on XBRL for Researchers as part of their initiative to increase researcher engagement with XBRL.
  • Associate Professor Phil Quinn’s research into insider trading was cited by SEC Chair Gary Gensler in his speech at the CFO Network Summit and reported on by the Wall Street Journal.
